From Florida to Fresh Snow and a Fresh Start
Michelle S’s Journey to Recovery at Swift River
A Mother on the Brink
Michelle S. knew her life was spiraling out of control when her boyfriend delivered an ultimatum: get help or lose custody of their child.
“I was a shell of a human,” she said. “I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted to be.” Desperate to keep her family together, Michelle searched for help and called a number that connected her to Swift River.
A World Away from Home
Within a day, she boarded a flight from Florida to Massachusetts.
“When I got there, it was snowing,” she recalled. “I watched the snow flurries and thought, ‘I’m exactly where I need to be.’”
At Swift River, Michelle dove into therapy and learned practical tools for maintaining sobriety.
Stepping into a New Life
After completing treatment, Michelle returned to Florida committed to working the 12 steps, attending meetings and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
“I have four sponsees now,” she said. “I’m a firm believer in showing up and being accountable.”
She also focused on fitness and self-care, habits that benefited not only herself but her family.
“My son is 8 years old, and he actually comes to meetings with me,” she said, laughing. “He’s seen me at my worst, so now he gets to see me at my best.”
Five Years of Gratitude
Michelle celebrated five years of sobriety in May. She has a thriving career, an active church life and even travels abroad on mission trips.
“I wouldn’t be flying internationally, going through customs—doing any of this—if I were still using,” she said. “Life is so good now.”
