Renewing Hope Through Gratitude

Chris C’s Journey to Recovery at Swift River

A Life-Altering Return

Chris C. first arrived at Swift River feeling hopeless and overwhelmed.

“A year ago, I was in one of the darkest places of my entire life,” he said. He would set his alarm for 4 a.m. just to drink enough alcohol and use enough drugs to make it through the morning.

“I was a train wreck,” he admitted, “sneaking around, hiding it from my friends and family, stealing—my life was completely unmanageable.”

Ten months after leaving Swift River, Chris returned to share his story with new patients.

“This place is so special, and I can feel that in my heart,” he said. “I come out of here vibrating at a higher energy, filled with love and joy.”

Gloom to Success

Chris, now 50, had been battling substance use for 30 years. Even though he had what many would consider a successful life—a wife, a business, two homes and a boat—he still felt empty.

“I drowned myself in drugs and alcohol every chance I got,” he recalled. Over time, friends who once tried to support him had to walk away. “They said they couldn’t watch me kill myself,” he said.

When it finally clicked that he couldn’t do this alone, Chris embraced professional help. At Swift River, he discovered the transformative power of gratitude. Staff members encouraged him to list three things he was grateful for every morning and evening.

“One day, the sun came out after a gloomy stretch,” he said. “We all just stood outside feeling it on our skin, and I realized I could feel grateful for something simple.”

Daily Practice, Daily Rewards

Today, Chris relies on a steady recovery routine: attending AA meetings, working with a sponsor, journaling and surrounding himself with positive peers.

“If you put half the effort you put into using into your recovery,” he said, “you cannot lose.” He stops to appreciate moments that once went unnoticed—like literally smelling the roses while walking his dog. “I realized this program was working when I found myself taking pictures of flowers,” he said, laughing.
